Certified Surgical Technologist, Operating Room, 36 Hours, Days

Under the direction of the RN circulator as dictated by the standards in the Medicare Conditions of Participation for surgical services, assists surgical teams during operative procedures in scrubbing for all physicians in assigned services. Arranges and inventories sterile set up for operations. Assists in preparing moving and positioning patients. Performs sterile scrub procedures and related activities such as preparation and draping the patient and operative area. Passes instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies in accordance with hospital policy and procedure. Participates in the turnover of operating rooms. Schedule: Monday through Friday, 0645-1915, 1 Day Shift of 12 hours, 36 hours per week. Cost center: 10010 - 2110 Operating Room. Union: UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers).

Responsibilities

Demonstrate independent functioning and proficiency in the scrub role in all cases in assigned specialty; Scrub for all physicians in assigned service area, providing high quality evidence-based clinical care with minimal supervision; Promote teamwork by formally precepting co-workers; Prepare the Operating Room for cases, including selecting and checking case carts and preference cards, and packing sterile supplies; Anticipate need for special equipment and supplies and request them from the circulating nurse; Set up back table and Mayo tray according to procedure and surgeon preference card; Perform surgical count with circulating nurse per UMMMC policy; Respond to needs of surgeon and team members, remain observant of the operative field, and perform emergency procedures as directed; Pass and track instruments, sutures and supplies during procedures; Label medications and solutions on sterile field, monitor sponges, needles and instruments, and care for specimens; Assist in preparing, moving and positioning patients; Perform sterile scrub procedures, including preparing and draping the patient and operative area; Participate in turnover of operating rooms

Requirements

Successful completion of an accredited school of surgical technology; Surgical technologist certification from a nationally recognized certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists, obtained as of the date of hire; Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification every two years; Maintain AST membership, required educational units and AST certification; Thorough knowledge of a specialized and technical field of Surgical Technology
