Generation Lead, Fuel-Based Generation

Fluidstack designs, builds and operates power generation for its AI infrastructure, including grids that stand alone with no utility behind them. The Power Generation team focuses on islanded gigawatt-scale grids, getting power online in months, repeatable power blocks, and grids whose large compute loads are specified as design variables. The Generation Lead will own fuel-based generation qualification, specification, acceptance, commissioning and fleet operation.

Responsibilities

Qualify the technologies: assess fuel-oxidation generation technologies (reciprocating engines, turbines, linear generators) and build the qualified technology and supplier list; Set the node standard: define the interface that turns any fuel-oxidation unit into one interchangeable node in the site's decentralized generation array; Size fuel-based capacity per block: decide capacity, unit sizes and redundancy for firming and backup roles, weighing cost, fuel use and uptime; Specify and accept every unit: write technical specifications and acceptance tests, and witness factory and site acceptance; Install, commission and run the fleet: manage installation, first fire, load testing against AI load profiles, handover, and operation tracking heat rate, availability, maintenance cost and overhaul intervals; Build the team: hire rotating equipment engineers for qualification, commissioning and operations

Requirements

10+ years of experience in fuel-based power generation, including prime mover selection, equipment specification and acceptance testing, and operating distributed generation fleets; Evaluated competing prime movers from several OEMs (engines, turbines or fuel cells) for a real project and can explain why the others lost; Written an equipment specification and acceptance test procedure, witnessed factory and site acceptance, and rejected or held a unit that did not meet it; Owned distributed generation in operation (oil and gas, mining, island utilities, CHP or data centers), tracked heat rate, availability and maintenance cost unit by unit, and changed run strategy to extend overhaul intervals or cut fuel burn; Integrated fuel-based generation with inverter-based resources on the same bus or in an islanded system; Commissioned generation through first fire and load testing; Worked across more than one generation technology or fuel and can explain which experience transfers; Writes clearly for OEM application engineers, site technicians and CEOs; Comfortable with regular travel, expecting 25% or more depending on business needs

Islanded or weak-grid operation with large load swings (mining, offshore, island utilities); Alternative and blended fuels (hydrogen blends, methanol, dual-fuel diesel) and electrochemical generation such as solid oxide fuel cells; Condition monitoring, predictive maintenance and emissions controls (SCR, oxidation catalysts) and their interplay with air permits
