Genetic Counselor

Overview: Provide genetic counseling to patients seen in Mercyhealth. Genetics, Rockford IL (Riverside). 80 Hours/2 Weeks. Monday - Friday, No Weekends. This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Public contact: Partners, physicians, patients/family, visitors, vendors.

Responsibilities

Provide genetic counseling to patients; Provide description of genetic counseling process during initial patient contact, gather relevant information including medical records/family history, and obtain appropriate current medical literature; Ensure distribution of a summary letter to the patient and referral source in a timely fashion; Assist/conduct counseling sessions, coordinate further care and follow-up; Participate in community and professional education, including lectures and educational conferences as funding allows; Participate in obtaining and utilizing grant funding; Promote public awareness of the regional genetics service and serve as a regional community resource for genetic disease-related inquiries; Maintain patient data, referral documentation and statistics; Attend continuing education programs as funding permits; Maintain current educational materials and medical resources; Provide genetic counseling and medical care for newborn screen cases and provide information to the State of IL NBS program as needed; Act as an educational resource/mentor for individuals interested in medicine and medical genetics; Provide genetic counseling services following NSGC/ABGC code of ethics guidelines

Requirements

Master's level Genetics Counselor degree; Strong organizational skills; Effective verbal and written communication; Quality customer service skills; Ability to read/comprehend written instructions and follow verbal instructions; Basic PC skills; Ability to manage stress appropriately, make decisions under pressure, and handle multiple priorities; Ability to work independently
