Linguist/Transcriber - Chichewa/Nyanja - Remote

We are building a team of Chichewa language specialists to support a multilingual speech-to-text project focused on African languages. You will work with existing Chichewa audio recordings (no recording needed), helping to create high-quality, accurate transcripts that support advanced language technology development. The project is expected to run for about 2–3 months, with around 20–30 hours of work per week. As an independent contractor, this role is not ideal as a full-time job or primary income source, and hours are not guaranteed.

Responsibilities

Identify and tag personal information (PII) in audio content; Mark background sounds and non-speech events according to the provided guidelines; Review and correct automatically generated Chichewa transcripts against the audio; Ensure high fidelity to spoken content, including noises and cross talk, following the annotation guidelines; Review finished transcripts for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to guidelines; Correct errors and provide structured feedback on linguistic issues where needed

Requirements

Native-level proficiency in Chichewa; Strong listening skills and close attention to detail; Good-quality headphones and a quiet place to work; Availability for around 20–30 hours per week over the 2–3 month project period

Nice to have

Prior experience with spoken language transcription or linguistic annotation; Background in linguistics, language studies, or translation
