Manager Research Operations - Mao lab

At Houston Methodist, the Manager Research Operations position is responsible for impacting the management, planning, development, budget, and other administrative activities of a Houston Methodist Academic Institute (HMAI) department. This position plans, manages and monitors operations to support the activities of the department.

Responsibilities

Manage the daily work activities of the work unit/department staff; Ensure quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency; Assist management in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives; Staffing, budget compliance, and contributing to hiring and termination decisions; Coaching and counseling employees on work-related performance; Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures; Implement training, monitoring and operations initiatives for ethical, legal and regulatory compliance; Perform selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees; Provide laboratory administration services including purchasing supplies and equipment; Maintain laboratory safety manual and study methods; Assist in department budget development and manage/audit department expenses; Manage and administer grants, contracts and budget preparations and expenditures; Support PIs with laboratory operations management; Identify and implement innovative solutions for workflow improvements; Assist the Chair with strategic planning for department missions and growth

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a Health Science, business, or related field; Three years of progressively responsible experience within a healthcare professional/administrative/laboratory management capacity, of which one year is in a people management/lead role; Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English; Ability to communicate through a variety of channels with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers; Ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment; Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in the workplace; Ability to direct, research, investigate, and develop approaches to unique work situations; Demonstrates leadership qualities and critical thinking

Nice to have

Experience in clinical research management preferred; Knowledge of grant submission procedures in research or academic setting; Knowledge of laboratory functions as it pertains to research or academia; Knowledge of quality assurance to understand and comply with safety standards
