Surgical Pathology Technologist-Hospital Lab Part-time Days

This position works 32 hours per week. Provides assistance to all staff pathologists and residents with gross examination and dissection of designated specimens, specimen receipt, laboratory computer system order entry, preparation of all tissues for gross examination, referral and delivery of samples and supply orders, and customer service (specimen collection and receipt information) via phone and direct communication.

Responsibilities

Provide assistance to staff pathologists and residents with gross examination and dissection of designated specimens; Perform specimen receipt, laboratory computer system order entry, and preparation of tissues for gross examination; Handle referral and delivery of samples, supply orders, and customer service (specimen collection and receipt information) by phone and direct communication; Communicate with clients, pathologists, residents, and supervisors regarding specimen problems; Participate in the laboratory occurrence management program; Verify specimen and requisition labeling; Resolve discrepancies and escalate to supervisor when necessary; Document cassettes, tissues, and specimen receipt accurately in logs and the LIS; Perform specimen photography or microphotography and assist with intra-operative consultations; Cut and stain cryostat sections and maintain staining setup and cryostat per SOP; Perform block reconciliation and review LIS case records for billing codes; Accession specimens into the Laboratory Information System; Maintain specimen storage areas, triage and discard specimens per SOP; Maintain a clean and safe work environment and comply with regulatory requirements; Maintain supply stock and notify management of shortages; Participate in Safety and Infection Control activities; Assist with process improvement projects; May provide coverage for autopsy procedures and assist with resident orientation

Requirements

A.S. degree, preferably in the biological, life sciences, medical laboratory technology, or other related field; Computer experience with keyboard proficiency; Familiarity with medical terminology

Nice to have

B.S. degree, preferably in the biological, life sciences, medical laboratory technology, or other related field; Prior work experience in laboratory support or health related experience
