Forward Deployed Engineer

Forward Deployed Engineering is how OpenLoop builds its platform with real clients. An FDE embeds with a client, works in the client's own codebase, and builds their integration against OpenLoop's production API. Platform gaps are filed and built centrally so every client inherits the improvement. OpenLoop is a telehealth support solutions company co-founded by CEO Dr. Jon Lensing and COO Christian Williams, offering virtual care support across all 50 states. Core collaboration hours are CST 8am to 5pm, with occasional flexibility for client-facing work. Remote within the United States with periodic travel to clients and team working sessions.

Responsibilities

Embed with client engineering teams and build their integrations on OpenLoop's Partner API, owning the outcome through go-live and after; Build AI-enabled systems for clients and internally, including SDKs, reference implementations, a CLI, machine-readable docs, and agentic workflows with human review and evaluation; Run and improve deployments using internal agents, with human approval of all agent outputs; Turn client needs into reusable recipes, checks, and platform improvements; Turn vague or over-promised client asks into phased, defensible scopes; Never undo prior work, keeping changes additive or explicitly superseding; Communicate clearly about what cannot be committed to, what should not be done, and what will not fit the timeline; Share learnings, review integration designs, and help build the team playbook

Requirements

5 to 15+ years of software engineering experience, including significant time delivering directly for external customers or partners; End-to-end ownership of complex, customer-facing technical delivery; Strong integration engineering depth (API design and consumption, auth, webhooks versus polling, idempotency, rate limits, pagination, schema drift, reconciliation, cloud infrastructure); Builds with AI agents daily and can verify their output and evaluate LLM-based systems before customer release; Experience handling sensitive data with a security-first mindset; Excellent communication with technical and non-technical audiences; Demonstrated judgment about scope; Evidence of leverage beyond own delivery (SDKs, tooling, checks, reference implementations)

Nice to have

Experience in healthcare or another regulated domain; Practical experience shipping LLM-based or agentic systems to production; Experience building developer platforms (SDKs, CLIs, API conventions, tested documentation); Familiarity with EHR, scheduling, pharmacy or payments integrations, FHIR is a plus; Experience working alongside sales or solutions teams in pre-sales technical conversations; Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience
