1Password is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the Device Trust Platform team, the group responsible for the lower-level platforms that power 1Password Device Trust and will, over time, underpin Device Security and the broader 1Password security platform. These systems ingest, process, and store a high volume of telemetry from customer devices and must operate with Tier 0 reliability. The team is end-to-end, responsible for data pipelines, storage systems, infrastructure, and the application code running on them. The role reports to the Senior Manager, Engineering for Device Trust. This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US. Salary: USA-based roles $192,000-$278,000 USD annual base; Canada-based roles $171,000-$248,000 CAD annual base.
Responsibilities
Lead, coach, and grow a team of senior and staff engineers who own the platform layer of Device Trust; Hire, onboard, and integrate new engineers as the team grows; Give engineers room to design solutions while holding them accountable to outcomes; Spend time removing obstacles and advocate for the team's needs with leadership and partner teams; Support career development through regular feedback, mentorship, and growth planning; Foster a culture of ownership, trust, and psychological safety; Own the reliability and resiliency of Device Trust applications and the platforms beneath them against a Tier 0 expectation; Define and maintain SLOs, error budgets, and monitoring and alerting; Lead the on-call program, including rotation design, escalation paths, and runbooks; Run incident response and blameless postmortems, and drive remediation work to completion; Plan and execute multi-region failover, disaster recovery, and capacity work; Own observability for the Device Trust platform in Datadog; Continue instrumenting services end to end so latency, throughput, error rates, and data freshness are visible per customer, per region, and per pipeline stage; Make platform health legible to people outside the team through dashboards and status reporting; Treat alert quality as an engineering problem; Use observability data to drive capacity planning and find reliability risk early; Partner with staff engineers to evolve data ingestion, processing, and storage architecture; Set technical direction for how these platforms generalize to serve Device Security and future products; Maintain a high bar for performance, security, and data integrity; Identify and mitigate risks from architectural change, migrations, and new dependencies; Scope, plan, and drive execution of platform initiatives; Coordinate cycle planning, design reviews, and project planning; Cascade priorities, progress, and risk to stakeholders; Contribute to cross-team initiatives that raise the reliability bar across engineeringRequirements
3+ years managing and mentoring software engineering teams, including senior and staff engineers, with a track record of engineers growing in scope and seniority under your leadership; A strong background in the infrastructure behind highly reliable, high-volume data systems: ingestion pipelines, streaming or queueing systems, large datastores, and the operational tooling around them; Hands-on experience operating multi-region systems with failover and redundancy, and owning availability for a service customers treat as critical: SLOs, incident response, postmortems, and the follow-through that keeps incidents from recurring; Experience owning production observability: instrumentation, dashboards, alerting, and using telemetry to drive reliability and capacity decisions. Datadog experience is strongly preferred; Significant hands-on development experience and strong technical judgment: you can review the code your team writes and partner with staff engineers on architecture and system design; Demonstrated success leading a hybrid team that spans infrastructure and application engineering on one roadmap; A leadership style grounded in empowering the team: you set direction, clear the path, and defer to the engineers closest to the problem, staying calm and structured under pressure; Excellent communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including explaining reliability risk and trade-offs to product and leadership partnersNice to have
Experience with Ruby on Rails applications at scale, or with Go services and agent-based data collection; Experience with osquery, endpoint telemetry, or other device-data pipelines; Experience running Kubernetes-based platforms on AWS or another major cloud, including infrastructure-as-code; Experience managing remote and distributed teams; Experience building systems that balance rapid iteration with enterprise-grade security and compliance requirements; Deep experience with Datadog, including APM, log management, custom metrics, and SLO-based monitoringBenefits
Immediate participation in benefits program (health, dental, 401k or RRSP and many others); Generous paid time off; Equity grant (RSU program); Participation in incentive programs where applicable; Maternity and parental leave top-up programs; Competitive health benefits; Retirement matching program; Free 1Password account; Paid volunteer days; Peer-to-peer recognition through Bonusly; Remote-first work environmentHow to apply
