NY Area Director

Proper Food is a food company that crafts fresh, whole, local food by hand every morning for its stores, catering and wholesale operations. The company has three locations in New York City and plans growth, including a flagship location at JFK airport. The Area Director will provide leadership for all existing NY stores, launch new stores, report directly to the CEO, and work closely with the Executive Chef and leadership team. The role blends hands-on operational leadership with market-building strategy, initially managing hourly team members and store operations, and later hiring multi-unit managers as the market grows.

Responsibilities

Build, coach and retain high performing teams that embody Proper Food's culture and values; Address performance issues swiftly; Hire (or promote) and develop managers as the market grows; Manage employee scheduling and payroll; Coordinate staffing on a weekly and daily basis; Lead by example with hands-on management; Train, coach and mentor managers; Develop a pipeline of future leaders; Develop and manage systems to ensure high operating standards and legal compliance with local, state and federal laws; Partner with SF Area Director to enable national consistency; Oversee and set daily and weekly inventory pars; Supervise supply ordering; Collaborate with Director of Business Development to grow catering and wholesale programs; Deliver an exceptional customer experience and closely monitor customer feedback across channels; Partner closely with the Executive Chef and commissary kitchen team; Communicate customer feedback and sales trends to influence menu; Support launch of seasonal menu updates and product/marketing roll-outs; Ensure NY stores meet financial and qualitative goals; Drive revenue, manage labor and supply costs, and set daily pars to impact profitability; Launch and scale new store openings, including JFK airport

Requirements

5+ years of multi-unit restaurant/retail management experience, managing a team of 20+ people; Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel; Adept at using technology (e.g., POS, online ordering & delivery, Dropbox, Slack, etc.); Valid Food Handlers Card required before start date; An exceptional leader with strong ability to inspire, coach people to full potential, and hold team members accountable; Able to handle a fast-paced, demanding environment with grace; Proactive, resourceful and scrappy; Operationally minded, with strong systems, process and root-cause problem-solving skills; Service oriented with a commitment to quality and consistency; Enthusiastic about joining an early-stage, rapidly growing concept; Contagious positive energy and warmth; Unwavering honesty, authenticity and integrity; Ability to lift, push, pull and carry up to 50 pounds; Ability to stand, walk, and bend for up to 8 hours; Comfortable with exposure to cold refrigeration, heat from hot surfaces or espresso machines, and cleaning chemicals
