Patient Care Tech-General Medicine 16W Full-time Days

The Patient Care Technician reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. The Patient Care Technician's primary function is to assist and support the Professional Registered Nurse in all aspects of direct and indirect patient care activities. The Patient Care Technician functions as a member of the unit staff under the direction and supervision of the professional Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

Assist and support the Professional Registered Nurse in all aspects of direct and indirect patient care activities; Take and record vital signs, weight, height and intake/output; Obtain EKGs, capillary blood glucose and perform phlebotomy; Collect specimens (urine, stool, blood and sputum); Provide patient hygiene, newborn care and feeding assistance; Ambulate patients and assist with pre- and post-operative care; Transport patients, equipment and supplies; Respond to emergency situations and initiate basic life support; Report observations, document appropriately and promptly notify the RN of changes in patient condition; Maintain a safe and clean environment and stock supplies; Participate in staff meetings, quality improvement activities and orientation of new staff

Requirements

CNA Certification or currently enrolled in School of Nursing who has successfully completed basic clinical rotations; CPR recognition by the American Heart Association (BLS for Healthcare Providers); Minimum of 90% correct on annual mandatory Health and Safety Training quizzes; Unit based recognition for Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring; High school diploma required

Nice to have

One year of college or nursing education or equivalent experience; Previous experience in a health care setting with a demonstrated ability to relate to patients, family, nursing and medical staff; Associates or Bachelor's degree
