Principal Backend Engineer

Join us as Principal Backend Engineer in the Foundations domain and help scale the critical systems that power Qonto's 600,000+ customers — before they become bottlenecks. You'll drive company-wide backend initiatives spanning transactions, search, monetization, permissions, and integrations.

Responsibilities

Anticipate and solve scale challenges before they hit: map technical risks across Foundations' core systems and drive architectural work; Lead broad, high-stakes technical initiatives: own end-to-end programs spanning multiple teams; Shape the platform's future: identify where Foundations needs to invest next and translate bets into technical roadmaps; Multiply the engineering org around you: raise the bar for groups of engineers through mentoring, coaching, and technical enablement; Bridge business goals and backend decisions: connect company and customer needs to concrete technical plans

Large-scale backend architecture: designed and scaled high-volume systems under real growth pressure; Company-wide technical leadership: driven complex, multi-team initiatives touching Legal, Risk, Compliance, and leadership; Autonomous by default: thrive in ambiguous environments, map ecosystems, surface risks early, and propose initiatives; Multiplier, not just contributor: raised the bar for groups of engineers through mentoring, documentation, or structured technical enablement; AI in your workflow: use AI tools to accelerate how you architect, prototype, and communicate
