Neara uses advanced machine learning to create engineering-grade, physics-enabled digital twins of electricity grids across four continents, helping asset owners stress-test networks against extreme weather and structural stress. The role leads Neara's Experience Platform, taking technical ownership of the platform's usability, performance and visual appeal across desktop and mobile devices. It is a people-first leadership position with strong technical depth in software engineering, splitting time between leading the team and driving delivery while remaining hands-on with system design and complex technical challenges.

Responsibilities

Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team, supporting technical development and career progression; Own delivery for the team's domain, setting clear goals, defining milestones, and ensuring projects ship reliably and sustainably; Own workflows and development practices that balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability; Create clarity in ambiguous problem spaces and help break down complex technical challenges into achievable plans; Foster strong collaboration with Product, Design, Customer Success and Sales teams; Partner with other Tech Lead Managers to raise the bar across engineering and scale Neara's engineering culture; Stay hands-on with system design, architectural decisions, and writing and reviewing production-quality code; Shape client and product UX end to end, including the UI, design system, rendering and interaction performance, and 3D visualisation of very large networks; Build APIs, extension points and shared components used by other engineering teams, as well as end-user features

Requirements

Experience leading, mentoring, and growing engineers at multiple levels; Owned delivery end to end, accountable for outcomes; Ability to get up to speed fast in unfamiliar technical territory; Product sense and strong partnership with Product; Experience planning routes and adapting by shipping incrementally; Deep technical credibility with a track record of architecting and shipping complex, production-grade systems; Care factor for end user app experience (UI, design systems, performance, 3D rendering); Experience scaling a user experience to millions of objects; Ability to elicit good requirements from internal or external customers; Experience harmonising user experiences across many use cases; Product engineering experience for expert tooling (e.g., CAD, design tools, GIS, IDEs, serious data viz); Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; No-ego, outcome-oriented, and detail-obsessed; Current and unrestricted working rights (no visa sponsorship offered)

Nice to have

Experience owning a design system, component library or platform SDK that other teams depended on; Experience with graphics, WebGL/GPU work, or rendering large 3D scenes in a browser or desktop client; Consumer product background; Exposure to geospatial systems, utilities, energy, simulation, or physics-based platforms; Strong mathematical reasoning or a mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering background

Benefits

Competitive salary; Meaningful ESOP; Fully flexible working arrangements; Well-stocked office in Redfern; Regular office events; Working on a genuinely complex, innovative, and industry-leading product
