Gardener I - Conservatory - Reserve

This is an entry level, support position for the Horticulture crews and will be charged with general plant installation, maintenance, and other duties as assigned. The starting pay range for this position begins at $16.32 per hour and is based on the level of qualifications and relevant experience above the minimum requirements. Schedule may vary, but typically will work 5 hours/day, 2 days/week, Monday - Friday. Reserve: A position working up to 20 hours per week (between 100-999 hours per year).

Responsibilities

Performs basic ground maintenance duties including general cleanup, trash removal, weeding, mowing, hauling and chipping brush; Assists in basic gardening duties with supervision including preparing beds and installing plants, maintaining planted areas by cultivation, weeding, watering, limited pest control, mulching and staking; Recognizes significant woody and herbaceous plants by common name; Recognizes plant problems and brings them to the attention of the Supervisor; Reliably works as scheduled including weekends, emergency duty and overtime as required; Operates basic grounds equipment after appropriate training and always with appropriate personal protection equipment; Safely and efficiently operates hand tools including shovels, rakes, hoes, and hand saws; Assists in application of fertilizers and/or pesticides as required, with supervision; Uses proper watering techniques; Helps with special projects and events as needed; Other duties as required

Requirements

High school diploma; Some previous experience with the installation, maintenance, and care of annuals, perennials, and shrubs; Comfortable with basic plant identification; Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as in a team; Proactive and takes initiative where appropriate; Ability to exercise good judgment; Demonstrated commitment to world class guest service (internal and external); Comfortable interacting with guests and working in a guest service environment; Ability to operate small gardening equipment and machinery safely (tractors, mowers, etc.) and associated motorized equipment; Become WPS certified within 10 days of hire; Valid driver's license and at least 19 years of age; Ability to stand/walk for extended periods; Ability to kneel, stoop, bend, reach below and overhead; Ability to lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis; Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding as needed; Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather; Ability to work safely with and around pesticides and other chemicals
