Automation Engineer

We're building a company where the boring work gets done by machines. The company has already invested in automated process discovery tooling and has a substantial portfolio of RPA automations running in production. This role is part greenfield, part stewardship: building new automations on workflow orchestration and RPA platforms, plus custom code where a visual builder isn't the right tool, and taking ownership of an existing automation portfolio. The role requires genuine business analyst instincts to sit with users and understand processes before rebuilding them.

Responsibilities

Inherit and own the existing RPA portfolio: assess health, fix what is brittle, consolidate duplicates, document what is undocumented, and retire flows that no longer earn their keep; Interview and observe the people doing the work, run discovery sessions and workshops, and surface exceptions, workarounds, and edge cases; Turn process discovery output into a prioritized, quantified automation backlog; Write requirements including user stories, acceptance criteria, exception paths, and failure modes; Design, build, test, and maintain new automations across workflow and RPA platforms, plus custom code where appropriate; Own reliability across the portfolio: monitoring, alerting, error handling, retries, and runbooks; Document processes clearly enough for the owning team to understand and adjust them; Measure what shipped against what was promised and report it honestly; Help the rest of the company improve through internal enablement, patterns, guardrails, and knowing when not to automate

Requirements

You automate your own work (you have built scripts, shortcuts, or pipelines that saved time, and then built more); Hands-on with AI dev tooling such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Codex; Business analyst instincts (can run discovery sessions, elicit requirements, and get to the real process); Practical engineering skills in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar, with REST APIs, auth flows, JSON, webhooks, and Git; Workflow automation experience with any major orchestration or iPaaS platform; Willingness to maintain, not just build, someone else's work; Systems thinking about people and getting buy-in before changing how a job works; Pragmatism about which processes should be automated, eliminated, or renegotiated first

Nice to have

Business process modeling (BPMN or equivalent); Experience with RPA at scale, especially inheriting, auditing, or consolidating an existing bot portfolio; n8n experience; Familiarity with task or process mining tools; Browser and UI automation (Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium); Formal continuous improvement background (Lean, Six Sigma, value stream mapping); Built and shipped things with LLM APIs (structured extraction, document processing, tool-using agents); SQL and data work (dbt, warehouse modeling, BI tooling); Light infrastructure (Docker, CI/CD, cloud AWS/GCP/Azure, self-hosting automation platforms)
