Pharmacy Technician II

Pharmacy exists to ensure safe, effective, and affordable medication use in our communities, one person at a time. The Pharmacy Technician serves as a part of the healthcare team at UVA Health Northern VA Culpeper and collaborates with other team members, to provide optimal care. The Technician accepts responsibility, authority, and accountability for management and provision of care in accordance with the current policies and procedures. The Pharmacy Technician is able to demonstrates the ability to competently work in different general and specialized areas of pharmacy practice.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate the ability to competently work in general and specialized areas of the pharmacy practice; Participate in the training of new employees; Fill, prepare, and deliver medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist/licensed independent practitioner; Consistently follow policy and procedures; Ensure adequate supplies are available for continuous patient care; Triage and escalate any questions or issues outside the pharmacy technician’s scope of practice to the staff pharmacist or supervisor as needed; Use appropriate systems for processing of patient information; Ensure quality is maintained according to departmental and legal requirements; Appropriately operate pharmacy equipment; Maintain considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration; Demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and communication skills with other healthcare professionals.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required; 18 months minimum of relevant experience, 1 year of sterile compounding experience, or 1 year of employment required; Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required; Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (ExCPT) required; State Registration and/or evidence of renewal required fifteen days prior to expiration; Technicians required to be certified through PTCB, National Healthcareer Association (NHA), actively enrolled in pharmacy school, or active in Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) or Foreign Pharmacy Equivalency Certification (FPGEC); Considerable knowledge and application of basic math skills, including ratio and proportion relationships; Strong verbal and written communication skills; Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; Basic technology skills; Ability to drive/travel to multiple facilities/locations as needed; Ability to work as part of a high performing, change ready and resilient team.

Nice to have

Considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects; ability to demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and communication skills with other healthcare professionals.
