PhD Swelling Study from Pouch to Cylindrical Cells (f/m/x) at BMW Group. As a PhD candidate in the Battery Technology team, you will contribute to cutting-edge research in electromobility. Your work focuses on understanding the mechanical–electrochemical interactions in lithium-ion batteries, particularly the transferability of behavior between different cell formats. This research plays a vital role in advancing next-generation battery systems with silicon-containing anodes, supporting our commitment to sustainable and high-performance electric vehicles.

Responsibilities

Support the design and production of pouch and cylindrical cells for experimental validation; Conduct electrochemical testing under controlled mechanical pressure conditions; Analyze impedance, ageing, and performance behavior across different cell formats; Develop and apply simulation models to establish pressure–performance relationships; Support the derivation of transferability criteria between pouch and cylindrical cell formats; Validate experimental findings through computational modeling approaches; Contribute to independent task completion with regular feedback from mentor

Requirements

Master's degree in electrochemistry, materials science, physics, or a related field; Strong interest in battery technology and hands-on experimental expertise; Solid understanding of electrochemical measurement techniques and battery testing procedures; Business fluent in Englisch and German

Nice to have

Experience in data analysis and simulation tools such as COMSOL or comparable software is a plus
